A study by the University of the Philippines Diliman revealed that burong isda, a traditional Kapampangan fermented fish dish, contains Limosilactobacillus fermentum, a beneficial microbe known to support gut health and boost the immune system. The bacteria can survive the stomach’s acidic environment and even show antifungal properties.
Researchers identified two strains of this probiotic from samples collected in Arayat. These “good bacteria” help maintain digestive balance, produce essential B vitamins, and protect against harmful fungi such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus. The study also confirmed that the strains are safe and non-pathogenic.
The research was conducted by scientists from the UP Diliman College of Science – National Sciences Research Institute, in collaboration with experts from the University of Santo Tomas.
